Chapter Nineteen

I barely pay attention as a young woman escorts us to a large, round hut just on the edge of the oasis. The colors and the brightness I saw on our way seem to mock me now with their cheeriness. The constant staring of the people milling about the oasis is getting on my nerves, and it’s taking all of my energy not to explode and hit somebody. Anybody. We pass by many little houses and huts on our way down a sand-covered path before arriving at a small cave with a wooden door. The young woman ushers us in the door, and I hear a squeak as she rushes away after she closes the door.

She’s afraid of us. Like all the others.

I look around the place, trying to calm down. Up a couple of stone stairs, two beds sit on a raised platform on top of soft woven rugs. I itch to just curl up on one of them; it’s been so long since I’ve lain on something plush and comfy. A soft waterfall tumbles off the far-left wall into a large pool. I walk over and graze my hand across the water’s surface and then plunge my hand in fully when I realize it’s warm. A warm bath, a clean bed… at least the Coven knows how to treat their guests.

“What the hell was that?” Aiden’s voice grumbles behind me. I hadn’t realized his irritation while I was wrestling with my own.

I roll my eyes and stand to face him. “It was bullshit. That’s what it was. All prophecies are.”

Aiden moves to me and grabs my arm. I look up at him in alarm. “I’m not talking about the damn prophecy; I’m talking about you going off on those mages.”

I jerk my arm away from him and storm over to one of the beds, stripping out of my weapons and bags. How dare he? “First of all, don’t grab me, or I swear by the Lady I’ll take your hand off.” I throw my dagger down violently. “Second of all, you heard them. They twisted all of my questions, didn’t answer a single thing, and then went off about some second Coven of history-makers.”

“You were disrespectful, Grace,” Aiden continues to argue. “We need them to get us home, you know.”

I scoff even though I know he is probably right. I pull off my jacket and let it fall to the floor. “I am here to find answers about Leo. Nothing more, nothing less. If they knew about me like they said, they knew why I was there. They know more. They were just choosing to withhold it.”

“Look, I get that you’re mortal, and you don’t understand how things work around here, but maybe pissing off the people who were offering us a brief moment of protection from the demons wasn’t the best idea,” he said sternly. “That’s all I’m saying.”

I whip around and get up close to Aiden. “I don’t know about you, but I was doing just fine without their so-called help.
